🤒 Babies build their immune systems very quickly when first introduced to the childcare setting. Mamas are always warned- they will be very sick, but it will build their immune system! It’s inevitable.
🌡We still were not prepared for baby’s first fever and first runny nose! (Or the first ambulance ride, but that’s another story.) When Hannah got hit with two nasty viruses, she needed a LOT of help with her runny and stuffy nose.
🦠Something I learned the hard way- if you use the snot sucker, that snot will come right back. Fast. It’s worth doing prior to a feed because baby needs to breathe through the nose, but if picking between saline spray or suctioning, go with the saline spray!
📌Essentials for helping with baby’s stuffy nose:
1. NoseFrida Snot Sucker @fridababy
2. Saline Spray
We did not like the one provided by NoseFrida- it’s a pump, just trust me! the mist works so much better. Try @littleremedies or @zarbees
Saline spray applied prior to suctioning to moisten and loosen up mucus, then immediately following for moisture.
3. Humidifier (with distilled water) We love our BreatheFrida humidifier!
4. @oogiebear for dry and wet boogers (bear prevents you from going too far!)
5. @boogiewipes (saline + gentle wipes!)
6. Rectal thermometer- Frida Baby 3-in-1 True Temp Digital Thermometer. Love this one. LED light and when folded, it acts as a stopper for safe rectal temp checking. (Use with lubricant).
👃🏻Suction gently. Being aggressive with the snot sucker can cause inflammation to the tissues, making congestion WORSE.
💧Hannah is the most congested when she wakes up in the mornings and after naps, so I like to hold her in the bathroom while the shower is running so she can breathe in some steam to loosen the mucus. It seems to bother her the most before feedings, but her appetite is still strong and I monitor for signs of dehydration (like depressed soft spot and fewer wet diapers). Another thing that helps is doing gentle massages around her swollen mucus membranes and warm compresses around her nose with a wet rag!
Help that baby get some relief! 🙏🏻
