Mama, Let's Talk...
About Things You Shouldn't Have to Ask
At the time I am writing this, I have 23,550 photos and 3,275 videos on my iPhone. I just had to upgrade my cloud and google drive storage plans. I absolutely have more than that by the time your eyes just skimmed over these words.
When Kaley asked me for a picture to use on the blog, I sent her a headshot of just me. Why? Because I have 3 pictures of Hannah and myself both looking at the camera and somewhat smiling.
23,550. Of those, 5,192 items were recorded since her birth.
I have developed quite the reputation for myself to be behind the lens. In high school, I was always uploading pictures to Facebook. Remember when that's what everyone used Facebook for? Plugging in your digital camera to upload all those pictures, spending hours writing captions and tagging people in each one. Then it was different; you strategically asked someone to take a picture of you with friend A, then friend B, and now friend B and C because you're BFF4LAEAEAEAE. I have all the pictures on my phone of family events since 2014 when I finally entered the smart phone world. Archaic, people.
When John and I began dating, he had the timeless possession of hundreds of photos backpacking through Europe with a few of his friends. And that was the last time he ever used a camera. Why would he need to? I document his entire life. I have to ask him to take pictures of me/us/our family. It's a point of contention. One day I want evidence of my varying shades of blonde hair and when we once travelled before a global pandemic and a baby.
You shouldn’t have to ask your husband, your sister, your __________ to capture these precious moments. Pictures are invaluable. It has been said to be in the moment, worry less about taking the photo. I urge you to TAKE THE PICTURE! Take the pictures for others. Staged or candid. And don't always be caught behind the lens. Step up, people. Hannah will want pictures of her mother taking care of her, too, I'd like to think. No matter how dirty my hair is that day!
